I just always feel like this is similar to going to the beach for a week, with all the toys, chairs, and umbrellas, and then trying to come home without a single grain of sand

The method they use to “cure” a patient of HIV is brutal. They use radiation/drugs/etc. to essentially kill every single CD4 cell in their body. This leaves the patient with an “open net” that allows all sorts of infections to possibly develop. They’ve tried this on at least two patients and failed. If just a single virus cell remain hidden, the HIV will come back full blown. So to trick the virus out of hiding, they are attempting to use interferon-an attractant to immune cells-to draw the cells out of hiding. Unfortunately for the patient, interferon triggers the fever response/sick feeling.

It’s still a gamble, and a massive therapeutic effort, but I guess if you have AIDS and are desperate enough, you’ll try anything
