Last one of the day....

Who is this?

He was awarded the medal of honor for something very odd. What was it?

No. He was awarded the MoH years before the B-52 existed.

I most certainly won't get a single German unit patch.

Anybody know what this used to be?

I'd put up a before image, but can't find any that don't give the answer away.

Alright. I'm getting out of here and will be out of pocket until Monday but I should be able to check in some to keep this thread going.

Anyway, our friend here is Richard Byrd. He was an American explorer in the early 20th century and served in the US Navy. He was awarded the Medal of Honor in the 20's for being the first man to ever fly over the North Pole. This is odd due to the fact the MoH is usually only a wartime award given for valor on the battlefield.

The locals were the wreck is located thought it was a Japanese mini-sub too.

It is the Submarine Explorer, built in New York during the civil war and later used to harvest pearls in South America.

It was one of - if not the - first modern submarine in that it had a double hull and used compressed air for depth control. It also had hatches that could be opened under water.

It was abandoned because the crews kept getting sick and dying from the bends (which was an unknown condition at the time). It sat rusting away in Panama until getting 'rediscovered' in 2001.

It really should be in the Smithsonian.

It looks to be a Skyraider and the Squadron patch is VA-25(?)Guessing they were dropping a special greeting to the North Vietnamese.

Very good, sir.

Now, extra bonus: What ship was VA-25 assigned to? And, what was the occasion?

Either Midway or Ranger. They were not always dedicated to one ship.

When you were bored at sea, any reason would do

In this case, it was on the Midway's '65 cruise. But, the "toilet bomb" was done for a specific reason to commemorate something...not out of boredom.

Time for a ship. This should be pretty easy for those who don't resort to "cheating."

Not going to give the name and spoil it for someone else, but visiting that vessel's current location is on my bucket list.
