Yikes. I should know this one but for the life of me I can't think of his name.
I'd give it more time but I've got to get up and head out for the day. The guy in the picture is Admiral George Dewey. He is best known for crushing the Spanish at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish American War.

OT, is there some reason why Paige is always giving you a hard time? Did you tap that and leave or something?
I'm really not sure where it started. She's only part of the IM thread clique that just don't like me.

That's the only way she can contribute to this thread.

Darth, tank question: what are the chains w/ balls on the end for at the back of the turret of the Merkava tank? Oh, and what rounds are they loading?

I've always wondered about the purpose of the chains. As for the rounds the black ones are High Explosive Anti-Tank ( HEAT). The others look to to just high explosive General purpose rounds.

Some low-tech type of reactive armor?

Thanks. Could, as Fightin said, some type of "reactive armor" for the likes of RPGs or whatever?

That's the only thing I can think of. I don't see how it could work in that role though.

yea the chain are a sort of rpg barrier. in Iraq we built a "RPG" fence made of chainlink.
the rpg has primary explosion to penetrate armor and a secondary last to destroy target from within.
chains will make denotation premature

Yeah, I guess. I'm just not sure hitting those chains would be enough to make a shaped charge projectile detonate prematurely.

Another plane - and it isn't quite what is normally thought. Type and who used it.

Looks like a Dauntless. Maybe the Army A-24 version?

yea it will we built rpg fences in Iraq and they worked well

That's the army's versions of the dauntless dive bomber. They called it the A-24 Banshee.

Considering how effective the Stuka was for the Germans, I've alway wondered why the us army never used more of the A-24s. We had air supremacy after D-day so they could have been used with impunity.

Good point, but I imagine extra supply chains, etc., plus the fact that Mustangs and Thunderbolts could be used in that role also.

see anything interesting about the name

Considering the pilot's name is Pike...

This. But the location of the P-51's radiator made ground attack very dangerous. Now the P-47, on the other hand, was a beast in that mode.

True. Loss of coolant sucks arse.
Kind of the WW2 version of A-10s and F-16's for the ground support role.
