Don't know on that one, Darth. The collar button appears to be that of an artillery unit. Other than that, I got nothing.

The collar does indeed show it's wearer to be that of an Artillery unit. The patch though is not just for an artillery unit. It represents an entire infantry division that this artilleryman's unit was attached to.

Rainbow division (42nd).
No idea on the patch but it may have been related to the fact that there were NG units from all over the us (Alabama has a statue representing their troop's participation). Douglas MacArthur was CO for part of WW1.

See ya Spiff. That patch was for 42nd Infantry Division. During WWI it was commanded by this guy...
That's Douglas MacArthur BTW)
He himself gave the idea for the patch due to the fact the division was made of men from all over the US which at that time was different. Most divisions at that time were made of men from the same area.

Is it that thing those British guys used to go up some river and place mines on some German ship?
Posted on 7/16/14 at 3:28 pm to GeauxxxTigers23
It's an Italian human torpedo and the pilot and co-pilot were not expected to kill themselves in the attack.

Check the post right above yours.
Not a bad guess though.

You picked a bad one with the 42nd. The Alabama State Archives & History building, which hosts the tribute to the state's contingent, is roughly 75 yards from where I am sitting as I type this post.

Alright... Let's go really obscure.....
What formation?
Who was it's most famous commander?

Not a clue.
You'll be able to stump me really easily on unit insignia. You just happened to pitch hanging a curve ball with the Rainbow division.

Ah, The one I posted was for the 7th Panzer Division. It's most famous commander was none other than Erwin Rommel. He commanded the division during the invasion of France where the unit earned it's nickname of "Ghost Division" due to the speed in which it advanced. The insignia I posted was the markings the division used on it's vehicles during the invasion of France. Later on they changed to this...
... for the duration of the war expect for during the Battle of Kursk in the summer of 1943 when the Germans changed all unit insignia for a brief time in an effort to confuse the Soviets. During Kursk, the 7th used this marking...
