This one should not be that hard....

1. What's this room's name?
2. Where is it?
3. For what purpose did this place originally serve?
4. What country was born in this room?
5. What war was ended in this room?

(no cheating!)

Indeed. The room in the picture is perhaps the most famious part of the palace. IT's known as the Hall of Mirrors.

quote:

Was a palace for the King

Correct. This was the residence of the French Royal family until they were driven from power in the French Revolution.

quote:

WW1 ended there

Correct again. The Treaty of Versailles which officially ended WWI was signed in that room.

quote:

Nation created?

IDK

The nation that was born in the Hall of Mirrors was the German Empire in 1871.

Napoleon III? I assume you mean the Franco-Prussian War. German was unified the same year (1871).

The Prussians blockaded Paris, and when all the animals in the Paris zoo had been eaten, the city's finest restaurants cam up with sewer rat recipes.

That guy was Napoleon III. He was the nephew of the original. Anyway he started the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, using a dispute over the succession of the Spanish throne as an excuse to go to war with the Prussia. The truth of the matter is he woefully underestimated the German states (particularly Prussia) and thought he could improve his popularity at home with an easy win. Well he was very wrong. The result of his folly was France defeated, Paris buring in Communist revolt, and finally the emergence of the German Empire. Basically many of the seed of a massive general war in Europe that finally sprung forth in the summer of 1914 were first planted in 1870 - 1871.

Very good guess.... But no.

Remember that Nijmegen is in Holland, and there are no hills in Holland like what is in that picture.

Ok, the other WWII bridge, at Remagen. I don't know the story, though.

I tried to go to Nijmegen when I was in the Netherlands a few years back, but train tickets from a The Hague to the east of the country are ridiculously expensive.

That's the one. It was named the Ludendorff Bridge. It spanned the Rhine River. It's significant in history because it was the capture of this bridge by the US 9th Armored Division that gave the Allies their first bridgehead over the Rhine, thus opening the heartland of Germany to invasion.

That's it for tonight... I'll be back tomorrow.
