on the right trail.

It was promised to change naval warfare and was to be the next big thing.... until it hit open water.

Those are Russian naval ensigns but I've never seen that vessel before.

Pretty neat looking, but I can't imagine it handled very well.

It looks like an Ericsson monitor with no hull and an open turret.

The asymmetric Blohm and Voss
they made a few of them. Was supposed to give a better field of view for the tail gunner and observer.

You've got me. I've studied naval warfare for decades and I've never seen that thing.

Bv-141. German observation aircraft.

It supposedly flew quite well despite the way it looked.

quote:

Novgorod and her near-sister Rear Admiral Popov proved poorly designed in use. They pitched and rolled excessively, even in moderate seas.[2] They were slow, maneuvered poorly, and were vulnerable to plunging fire. Worst was that the off-axis recoil of the guns would impart a centrifugal rotation to the ship.[2] In operational use, these ships would have to throw their single rudder hard over during firing, to act as "water brakes". This severely restricted the aiming and rate-of-fire of the main guns. Both ships (dubbed 'popoffkas' after their designer) served in the Danube Flotilla during the Russo-Turkish War. Both were redesignated as "Coastal Defense Armor-Clad Ships" in 1892, and relegated as storeships in 1903. They were not scrapped until 1912.

I love "different" aircraft.

The "Twin-Mustang" is my favorite plane of ALL time.

I wish they would do a decent model of the F-82! I do like that plane, but prefer the P-51B & D models, though.

Possibly, but different manufacturers.

I don't know the make or model but since it is a USCG flying boat, it almost has to be a Naval Aircraft Factory or Hall. The enclosed cockpit makes it too modern for a Curtiss.

It is, in fact, a Hall PH.

That's a 30's era Hall PH Flying Boat. The PBY replaced the ones the Navy used but the Coast Guard used it during WWII for anti-sub shore patrol.
