Just from looking at it, that GeeBee had to be the most unstable plane ever flown.

Overpowered and short...only about 18 feet long, if I remember correctly...

A footnote in history compared to the Phantom II

Looks so much like an F-86, so unless the Navy operated Sabres, that had to be it.
That's because it is a navalized F-86 - or more specifically the F-86 is a swept wing FJ-1.
North American started with the straight winged USN FJ-1 as the basis for the land based F-86 and then used the F-86's improvements to create the FJ-2.

Lot of crossover, to be sure.

One of my favorite planes of all time.

Among other accomplishments, the Phantom II settled the debate on whether a fighter needs a gun.

Exactly. Read where the likes of Olds talked about how many kills they could have had if the plane had a gun.

Olds wrote a poem about the F-4

It's more than crossover - there's an extremely high degree of commonality. The paint scheme, canopy position, and photo angle of the posted aircraft make it look different than the image most people have of the F-86.
Here are two aircraft in flight. The top one's an FJ-3 Fury. The bottom's a F-86.

And whether or not pilots need to be trained in the art of dog fighting!
I'm digging pretty deep here....

My favorite Phantom paint scheme of all-time.

I have a large photo of one of the Skyblazers above me as I type this...

She is a brutish thing, isn't she? But no, she's not French.

That's a fact. It also proved that a brick can fly if it has a big enough engine.
