Here's one for the naval crowd.
What's the name of this ship and what is she doing (aside from the obvious answer of firing her aft guns).

That's the German battleship Schlwswig-Holstein. She is bombarding the Polish coastline in the first shots of WWII.

Roi-Namur, Marines were clearing what they thought was a Japanese bunker and it was actually a torpedo magazine. that picture was snapped from across the water when it went off. killed a lot of Marines when it blew.

I remember reading about that. There was an a fighter flying over and the blast damaged it to the point it had to return to it's carrier.

Going back a few pages to (maybe) correct something.
The photo above may have been taken not from the Eagle's Nest but from the Berghof (Hitler's house at Obersalzberg). Hitler didn't much care for the Eagle's Nest and didn't go up there often. He did however have children at the Berghof quite frequently. So I'm guessing that this photo was actually taken on the terrace at the Berghof rather than at Eagle's Nest. Also the terrace at Eagle's Nest had stone archways of which there is no sign in that photo.
Also, the Germans never called it the Eagle's Nest. The actual name of the place is the Kehlsteinhaus.
