The Art of Power by Jon Meacham.
I have read several Jefferson centered books but this one really demonstrates just how close we were to becoming a hereditary monarchy during the Federalist era. Some very alarming quotes by Hamilton, Marshall, Pickering, Jay, Adams etc.. They actually had intentions of 'easing' the nation into a monarchical system because they felt the British model was the best form of Government in history to that time. New England congressman and Senators were calling for secession just before and after Jefferson was elected. He, Madison, Monroe, etc. , ruined their agenda.
All of this happening domestically along with the politics of the Louisianna Purchase, British warships attacking our shipping in our own harbors, Napoleans influence on our foreign policy, The Barbery Pirates, etc..
Very good read as it also shows how the cause of our civil war in 1861 was really set in motion 55 or so years before. Northern Federalist idealogy vs. Southern /Western Republican idealogy.
