There are only two general reasons why people still believe in deities: 1) social pressure starting at a young age that's passed on from one generation to the next and 2) to help cope with tough times and to get a reward at the end.
If deities didn't promise an afterlife and Jesus was just a mortal man with all the same advice, people would not even give a shite if they existed - much less worship them.
People only believe in God and Jesus because they want them to exist so they can profit by them. Adults care about God for the same reason kids care about Santa Claus: they want something.
