figured this might deserve its own thread as an offshoot of the David Allan Coe thread. curious how many of you are familiar with this absolutely fantastic documentary? it's pretty much just raw footage of a lot of the early outlaw country music artists, flimed mostly in Tennessee and Texas. super early footage of David Allan Coe, Townes Van Zandt, Charlie Daniels, Guy Clark, Steve Earle, and others. it's got a lot of music and also jsut a lot of footage of these guys hanging out and bullshitting. if you're looking for somethign to put on this weekend while you're having a couple tall glasses of water, you could do worse.
lots of stuff this like this:

Great movie, Rodney Crowell and Steve Earle were damn near teenagers. Another good one is this Guy Clark Doc also on Yiutube…

That version of 'Waitin' Around to Die' always gets me teary eyed. The whole vibe is just emotion.

Every year for the past 29-years the Old Quarter Acoustic Cafe in Galveston (413 20th Street) has held a 'Townes Van Zandt Wake.'
It's open mic event where musicians signup to play different TVZ songs.
Event was organized by TVZ bandmate, friend and former Old Quarter owner Rex “Wrecks” Bell (guy from the song Rex's Blues).
Rex died in November 2025 but it looks like someone has taken up organizing the event in Galveston for Jan. 1, 2026.
A similar event takes place in Joshua Tree, CA.

Otis Gibbs has a lot of stories from Rex.

And here's over 2 and a half hours of people telling TVZ stories, Rex included:

Heartworn Highways used to be impossible to find. I waited years before I finally saw it.

Took me way too long to see it’s not Heartworm Highways.

About 20-years ago Rex Bell started selling a microbrew called 'StarBock' at the Old Quarter bar in Galveston. Named it as a mashup of Lone Star and Shiner Bock. A nice little novelty he has going until Starbucks Coffee shows up and sues him for trademark infringement. Ended up in federal court in Galveston for several years as a David fighting mega-corp Goliath. Ended up winning but couldn't sell it outside the local area.

I had never even heard of it until a few years back. I was on deployment to the middle east and my buddy there told me about it. we were able to find it online and stream it one night sitting in our shitty ISO container-turned-housing rooms. great memories.

Townes gf seemed like a real sweetheart. They may not make 'em like that anymore.

Never gets old.
If anyone hasn't seen it and enjoys Heartworn Highways they may also enjoy Tales From the Tour Bus. Season 1 is about country music and season 2 is about Funk...both are great, in my opinion.
If you enjoy either and listen to Podcasts "Drifting Cowboy" is a good one...lots of stories about songwriters and mostly outlaw country stars but also just music stories in general.

On this same idea, sort of, I read "Living in the Woods in a Tree: Remembering Blaze Foley" by Sybil Rosen, a few years ago....highly enjoyable read.

How Blaze Foley's guitar lead to Townes organizing a grave robbery (allegedly).

My bother and I howl this one when going through Raton. It’s a ritual now

Got the DVD probably 25 years ago. I have always been a huge Guy Clark fan along with Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle. Can’t recommend this enough to people who really appreciate what good music is.

Snowing on Raton is one of my favorites by TVZ.
Fare the Well, Miss Carousel may be my all time favorite:
Mr. Mudd & Mr. Gold is up there, too.
Tecumseh Valley as far as more traditional storytelling songs of his goes.

The Ballad of Ramblin' Jack is another good documentary about Jack Elliott that folks may not know about. It is done from his daughter's perspective.
It is on YouTube in multiple parts, but may be somewhere else.
