Okay. So I’m moving back to Louisiana and have to get new health insurance. I currently have BCBS MS PPO and if I get the same thing in LA then it costs $6000 a year more. If I get the HMO it costs about the same.

It’s my understanding that with my current PPO plan that I’m pretty much covered anywhere in the US. If I get the LA HMO then I’m only covered in LA and if I or my family get sick and need medical care in any other state then I’d have to pay out of pocket.

Is this correct? What’s a good BCBS LA health plan? I don’t have insurance through work, I’m buying this policy straight from BCBS.

TIA

you might be better off dropping all insurance if you are already pretty healthy.

That's not entirely true. You would be covered out of state, but only within that blue plans network. Look up blue card

We purchase directly through BCBS. We are on the Blue Saver PPO that has an HSA component. We use a sole prop LLC and under a group rate with BCBS and my wife is the primary person on the plan. If you are purchasing for a family (based on what you said the incremental cost is, I would assume that is the case) then make sure whoever has more health issues is the primary person covered. It's been extremely expensive (approaches around $1300 a month for a family of four). However, the HMO was only around $300 a month less, didn't include the HSA, didn't allow for out of state if needed (we do live in cancer alley), and had higher deductibles which one could easily go through if anyone has regular issues or medications. It's really screwed up. Health, autos, home insurance and sales tax are all ridiculously high in this state relative to others.

I have BCBS plan "F" with Medicare. BCBS picks up 100% what Medicare doesn't pay. Been with them for 10+ years and yes, high dollar cost. I'm ahead of the game due to one time they paid out around 60K on just one claim.

I had the Community Blue plan back when I was buying it directly from them and the agent told me I’d still be covered for ER visits out of state.

It’s just that you’re only covered at specific Blue facilities in Louisiana for other stuff.

Basically - any ER was covered. Almost everything else, it was BR General and BR Clinic.

Do you normally visit non emergency doctors out of state?

HMO will have a smaller provider network than the PPO. But since you'll be establishing care in La, that's probably not a real inconvenience for you.

The problem would come in if you needed a certain doc/specialist that would be outside the HMO network

It probably wouldn't be totally OOP, but out of network, which is more money out of your pocket

No. But we do travel a lot and I wanted to make sure that if something happened and we were out of state that we would be covered.
