For the first time in modern ballet history, a male dancer is performing as part of the female ensemble at an international ballet company, signaling an important moment in an art form that often celebrates a particular ideal of femininity. Or, as the great choreographer George Balanchine said, “ballet is woman.”
But in a world with a heightened awareness of gender fluidity, and with transgender people increasingly accepted in a variety of professions, including acting and modeling, ballet is taking its own brave leap.
“I want to be seen as a ballerina,” said Mr. Johnsey, an American, who identifies as gender fluid but uses male pronouns. “My hair is up, I wear makeup, female attire. I am able to do female roles and look the part, so that is artistically what I do.”
quote:
“I don’t care what the body parts are, as long as artistically the dancer makes the choreography shine,” Ms. Whelan said. “If he is the best girl for the job, then great.” But, she added, this could be “another hurdle” for women in a field that is more difficult for them to succeed in than men. “Living the life of a woman in ballet means not having access to the privileges that come with the patriarchy,” she added.

FWIW ballet dancers make nurses and hairdressers look sane and stable by comparison. I will note that the male heterosexual dancers slay with abandon.

I was going to reply with some sarcastic remark about privilege, but I see someone already beat me to the outrage punch.

There is no such thing! For crying out loud, why do people keep repeating this nonsense as if it was fact?
You cannot be gender fluid. You cannot change from one gender to the other at the drop of a hat. There are only two genders and they are fixed at the moment of conception.
That is SCIENCE!!!
Take cells from ANYWHERE on that guy's body, and you will find the telltale signs of a male - the X, Y chromosomes. No matter how long his hair is, whether he tucks or has his junk removed, or how many female hormones he takes, HE WILL ALWAYS BE A MALE.
Everything else is nonsense and definitive signs of mental illness.

While I agree with you, why are posters on this board so obsessed with gender issues and sexual orientation? How does any of that affect you?

Because they are teaching young children in schools about this gender garbage, presenting it to them as normal behavior.
It’s anything but normal, it’s a perverted mental illness that should be treated as such, not celebrated.

I found this to be funny as hell, for some reason!

Just days after the 55th anniversary of the equal pay act there is another win for equality between the sexes. I'm sure this gives the ghost of JFK a semi.

Just because your son isn't good enough to play on the boys team doesn't mean he should get to tuck his weiner in and play against my daughter.

another liberal conundrum. She wants to accept that a man can be a woman but then she doesn’t want women to have to compete with men. Well, if a man has some sort of natural advantage over women then maybe men and women aren’t quite interchangeable after all.
