Has Cox/any internet provider done this to you?

Originally purchased their 250 Mbps internet. Today I get a notification that my bill is going up due to a promo ending. Tried to call and see if I could get it back down to the original promo price. Upon discussion, the Cox rep said "you can keep the same 500 Mbps speed at *this price*" and I told them to hold up because I know I never had 500 Mbps. At some point, 3 months ago I had my internet magically upgraded from 250 to 500, and under a new plan name. Never got a notification or anything.
Only thing I ever checked with my Cox bill was to see if it was the same price since that's what the app will show me. I pay the bill, then move on. Going through the rest of the bills, they show sections of what I purchased and any discount I received, either through bundles or promos. There were no discounts added. They just gave me 500 Mbps at the original price of 250.
I'm guessing Cox and possibly other internet providers sneak in these upgraded services without knowing, then will try to use the whole "get the same speed you had for this price" conversation when customers call about their promos ending. They probably think people won't look past the previous first two months' bills. Has anyone else ever noticed this with their internet providers?

I’d just shop around. Is att fiber available in your area?

Sadly it isn't. I'm about to just drop it back down to what I originally had but I'll actually be paying $7 less/month under this new plan compared to what I was paying under my original speeds.

I've had some weird stuff with spectrum internet but it doesn't seem like it is on purpose it just seems like incompetence. Especially with a move across town mixed in. But they have worked it out and I have had like 300 mb/s for 2+ years for $49.99 a month. (Which was a 12 month promo).
I have dealt with ATT internet over the years and I will never again. F ATT customer service.

I had the 1 gig internet for the promo then once it ended dropped it to the lowest available (I live alone).

Threads like this always make me so grateful I have Eatel/REV. Hands down the best I’ve ever had.

Just tell em you wanna cancel.
All of a sudden they have a new "deal" for ya.

You're missing the point. I'll tell you now I have not noticed a change in internet service over the last three months. Hell, it took Cox four days to come out and address the fact that a cable line was broken and hanging down on my trees. They said "oh we are aware an outage has occurred and they are working on it" but NO they didn't listen. I had to go to another department and have them send a different tech specifically to repair the cable line to my house. They DO NOT listen.
Again, this slight act of deception is what I'm talking about. Cox using the "you had this so here's what we can do" conversation when in actuality I never agreed to what was said. I bet this gets older customers/people who don't pay attention to their bills more often than I want to imagine. It's sleazy.

It should
I just switched from Cox to At&t, got 1 GIG for like 90 bucks. With cox I was at 500 mbps for 120 per month

Sadly I tried and the best I got was $20 off my bill for the "inconvenience" and it's labeled as an a credit due to outage.
It used to work when I was with AT&T but their customer service is just as bad.

I can believe it after dealing with them regarding outages that they never reported.
They only broadcast the outages after 3-4 neighbors insisted they lost connection.
I would drop them ASAP, but there aren't any other providers.

ATT fiber does this.

I noticed my cox bill had increased so I checked my plan. They moved me up to a 250 meg connection when I've always used their lowest bandwidth available.

Is AT&T fiber worth the hassle of switching?

I could understand you being upset if Cox increased your internet speed from 250 mps to 500 mps without telling you they were doing it if they also increased what they were charging you for the increased speed.
But as I understand it, Cox doubled your internet speed while charging you the same monthly cost. If that's correct, I'm not sure why you're pissed about it.

If you can, do it. It's cheaper and better quality internet. I don't have fiber available at my address so I'm stuck with Cox. I've gone back and forth between the two a few times. It's a pain but that's all we have out here.

Re-read what I stated below what you quoted. I was curious what other users have experienced.
1. Cox magically upgrades internet without customer knowing
2. Months go by
3. Renewal comes up, prices go up.
4. Cox offers new price for "current services" and they give very few options.
5. Current services are upgrades from the last 2-3 months that I did not agree to or know about.
The point of me asking all this is wondering if this is a deceptive tactic used by just Cox or other internet providers.
If I wanted a different faster service for an additional cost, that's a different conversation.
