There is this documentary on HBOMax called 'Murder on Middle Beach' I started watching. I am in the middle of the 2nd episode (our of 4).

The guy who does the documentary is the son of a woman in Connecticut who was killed in 2010. He was a teenager then and a lot of things were kept from him so he started doing his own investigation.

He learns she is involved in a pyramid scheme called 'Gifting Tables'. From what I understand.. and in this case, there were no products being sold.. Each week these women would meet and to join they had to pay $5000.

Once they pay their $5000 they have to recruit two women and then they get their $5000 back and the more people that is recruited under you, the bigger piece of the pie you get when they join.

They started it in 2008-09.. During the great recession. Like any pyramid scheme, its only a matter of time before the bottom falls out and when they started recruiting women who didn't just have $5k laying around and had to find ways to get the money and the bottom started falling out on them, that caused some problems..

I never heard of 'Gifting Tables;'. Anyone familiar with it?

One thing about all those women in that show is they are all Jewish. Why is that significant you may ask? Well, they were scamming their own family, friends, synagogue members and neighbors.

Why would you pay $5000 if there is nothing being sold. It sounds more like theft than a pyramid scheme.

Its not a real table. The different levels they can reach are called things like appetizers, dessert, etc.. shite that would be put on a table during a meal..

This pyramid has been around for a lot longer than that. In the 80's it was the Airplane game...

What on earth happened to the verb "to give?"

Why do we "gift" people things now?

There’s the legal/accounting term “gifting” that possibly has migrated into general over-use?
