Had to study the first movement of the St. Matthew Passion for my theory comprehensive exams. He’s basically writing in both a major and minor key at the same time ant one point and making it sound normal. The fact that he basically spent his entire career as the equivalent of a modern day music minister makes his output even more amazing.

I'm gonna hazard a wild guess to say that, if anything, it's a G minor melodic key (maybe?). The accidentals are insane on that score. I think I'd prefer playing Bach with my toes to even attempting sight reading something by Wagner.

Nah, I'm quite happy with Verdi and Rossini if I must sit through an opera, although I do admit I like Wagner's Lohengrin.
