Yes but you have to be open minded and accept the fact that you may not like what you hear from them all the time.
Also, if you go to one and have a bad experience, don't just say "screw it" No therapist is a good fit for everyone.

Therapist don't prescribe. Psychiatrists do.
Louisiana is a state where you don't have to be a psychiatrist to prescribe

We finally got one that was good at not taking sides. My wife had one that asked if I roughed her up during sex. My wife was perplexed since there was nothing contextually to spur the question. She seemed almost robotic in assessing for problems.

If I may ask, did yall have particular reasons that you felt the need to go or is it just some therapy to get things off your chest?

We would see the "Wizard" often in the Corps coming off deployment.I did see a guy in the waiting room eat an entire pack of hot dogs that he vocally had names for.

Therapists can't write prescriptions for anything but simple anti-depressants. Medical doctors (that aren't psychiatrists) can write scrips for meds related to mental health. Typically, general practitioners only write prescriptions for mental health matters after a psychiatrist has done evaluation.

Originally, I went due to marriage issues. I was trying to figure out what was wrong with me, and what I was doing wrong because my whole family thought I was the frick up in the marriage. I ultimately figured out the problem wasn't me.
I have been since my divorce at different times. Sometimes for a very specific reason, sometimes not.
I only go once every few months now if I feel like I need to.

It's worth it to not go through another divorce. A lot of us repeat the same mistake like dog that goes back to its vomit.
Sounds like you married a "blamer" and you were self loathing enough to eat it up. Lots of us have been there, done that.

What made it worse was my mom, dad, sister. They all blamed me to. Don't get me wrong, I realized that I was being just an OK husband and set out to change some things. She however, thought she was doing everything right and would change nothing.
Whomever I end up with next will certainly be getting a far better man than I was back then.

Our marriage counselor said women are good at enlisting people in their battles. Of course, we enlist our golf or sports.
Some of my guy friends asked why I went because they fear their wives enlisting the counselor. I tried to tell them a good one is balanced.

A good counselor is not going to take sides. They will call it like they see it. It's up to the parties involved to accept it and act on it.
In my case when the counselor called my ex wife out on anything, she would deny it and refuse to accept it. Even got up and stormed out of a couple of sessions.

Solo at the Psychiatrist ? Yes. He told me keep a side bitch and don't get caught and don't be reckless with multiple side bitches. He's a practicing MD in BR.
Marriage Psychologist ? Kinda. He was a pen and paper comparing things kinda guy who seemed to be on my side. Thus we had two sessions and she cut that shite.
Marriage Counselor ? frick no. she was a recovering drunk and blamed everything on alcohol.

I went once. It was alright. I liked the dude fine, and we had a good rapport I thought.
Never went back, because I'm pretty self-analytical (but not in a destructive way), so there isn't a lot he seemed to do. He would raise a topic, I'd level with him on it, suggest why I thought I was doing it and why I didn't want to do it anymore, and he'd largely agree. He might give me a couple of thoughts which I appreciated, but it's not like he could tell me the solutions.
It's not that I don't appreciate the job they do, I'm just not sure what one could do for me. I do think that it could be useful for the SO and I, but I just don't see myself as someone who is going to get a lot out of therapy unless it is just to share my thoughts with another human being. Which is kind of nice, but not for the $$$.
