My oldest friend has a HEB store close to his house and several times we have gone there to eat lunch LOL....seriously, at this one anyway, about once a week they have samples of brats and beer for like a quarter. Good brats and great beer.

I worked for them for 30 years. Having experienced everything 'behind the scenes' I'd say 95% of everyone I ever worked with in all the different departments were solid folks. I worked at probably 8 different stores over the years and it is best described as a solid work culture that is taught to all the employees. Some things started to get wonky the last years I worked and I attribute that to OG Butt dying and his kid taking over.
In any case, we moved out of TX and hands down its the biggest thing I miss. We shop at King Soopers now. Their new stores literally copy what HEB has achieved without the level of customer care. It might look 95% like an HEB, but the employees at HEB are far and beyond better at executing the grocery business.

They ask parents at checkout if your kids want buddy bucks. Little fake dollars they can put into a prize wheel.
Kids love it and will actually behave if you dangle that carrot. Brilliant.

It’s everything. The produce, meat, their own brand selections, the staff. All of it. There’s no comparison in my opinion.

I worked in produce during college, which is normally right next to the sushi guys.
I'm not a big sushi fan, but the firecracker made with crushed flamin' hot cheetos was legit.
On the overall subject, they also treat their employees really well and the employee discount on HEB items was awesome.(Some of the free items we got were not quite so good though...like the big red flavored cereal)
