That's a weird one for them to start with in this state considering he was big into Indians rights and stopping the spread of slavery in the US.

The only explanation is because he's white. That's all I can come up with.

He did technically own some slaves inherited from his 3rd marriage and in his final run for Governor he made what seemed to be a political calculation by running on slavery not getting banned in the South (though was still against it's expansion) in an attempt to stop succession from happening.

That has to be what their ire stems from but if you look at his whole career and life he clearly was not a fan of slavery.

I find it odd that people can't figure out what is going here. It's not about the Civil War.

Mitch has friends in high places in Texas. I'm sure he will exert some pressure.

Dandy. But don't expect to erase Texas history because their ancestry said buy all you want.

Texas would still be part of Mexico if it wasn't for him right?

There are plenty of people that would be much easier for them to go after.

For example, Mirabeau B. Lamar wanted and attempted to commit genocide on the various Indian tribes in Texas and he wanted to ban free blacks from living in the state. (to the point that he signed a bill stating if they didn't move they would captured and put into slavery)

Good info. Did not know this.
For those wanting to take down the monuments;
This crap has got to end.
I am sure at some point in the previous centuries before he was in Texas, his family was either Slaves or Serfs in Europe.
That argument is ludicrous and needs to be shut down. Everyone on this planet's ancestor's have been slaves, have been conquered and or mistreated at some point in history by some other culture, religion or ethnicity.
Get OVER it!
