Assuming you have a big family and a lot of close friends, when do you draw the line on how many groomsmen is too many?
Asking for anyone who has had experience with this.
Who did you leave out? How butthurt did they get?
Well, for me, I will have as many groomsman as my wife has bridesmaids. I just hope it is closer to 4 than 10.

Minimal number of Groomsmen to match bridesmaids.
Anyone else you want to recognize should be appointed an Usher or Honorary Usher. Don't make them wear a tux but let them hang out in the back and drink with you before the wedding. The Groomsmen that have to wear a tux and stand up there will be jealous of those guys and not the other way around.
These aren't women we are talking about after all.

Yeah I waited until the bridesmaids were settled. Have 8 groomsmen and could've had more. Kind of tough picking and choosing friends but there is always ushers to fill and make sure you know you can invite whoever you want to the bachelor party.

No one gives a shite about seeing a parade of people that don't matter in the grand scheme of the ceremony parading down the aisle making things longer than it already is.

I had 10 because the wife did.
I had a perfect group though. Basically all of my closest friends were in my wedding which is kind of cool.

And what arbitrary reason can you give for this limit?
Enough space at the altar to avoid the wedding party spilling off of it like a damn friend parade

The wedding is about the bride. However many bridesmaids she will have is how many groomsmen you need to come up with.

Minus one.
This will make one bridesmaid very self conscious and probably easier to bang. It's common courtesy to show towards your groomsmen.

I didn't have that many because I thought anyone "gave a shite about watching a parade of people that don't matter."
They all mattered to me, and that's really all I care about.

My church could have handled more, so not an issue.

Do a destination wedding. Cuts out the riff raff

I went with the frick it ask everyone, ended up having a bunch, but the rehearsal and all was more fun. If they don't mind going to the expense of being in it then who cares.
We just doubled up some of them on the bridesmaids.
your wedding is likely the last time you and all your close friends will ever be together hanging out, if you have a lot of close friends then ask them all and put it on them to say no.

I have a combined 5 brothers and stepbrothers, 2 very close friends, and a cousin I am very close to. Good thing there is that usher role. I've been a groomsmen 7 or 8 times and an usher twice. I far prefer being an usher.

frick, the last wedding I ushered in, I still had to rent the tux. Complete with terribly uncomfortable shoes.

Most weddings I've been to the ushers wear the same tux everyone else does.

I mean, it's whatever floats your boat.
It's just my opinion that being a groomsman/bridesmaid or not shouldn't affect a friendship. As long as they are at the wedding and you get to be with them, I think that's all that matters.
That's why me and my wife decided to go with a fairly small wedding party. So we didn't have to draw a line at where friends were good enough friends to be in the wedding party. Our wedding party was our siblings and each of our best friends.

5 groomsmen is where I would draw the line.
