I prefer a 6 point grading scale but a 10 is also common

Impossible to say without viewing the terrain.
If you have higher ground to one or more sides you'll probably need to French drain, but not certainly.

you already screwing up, french drains always clog up and cause water issues in your home at some point, and you dont "build up" anything or you are just creating levees to flood your foundation
you dig out to slope the ground away from your house to drain naturally digging up and removing any humps or high spots as you go.
