When most people think of a significant other, they think about romance, and dating, and fricking. He is putting his dog in that context to most reasonable people. Even as a joke, that is odd. Again, nobody is assuming he wants to frick his dog. We think it's strange to even make that connection in jest.

I'm 74 years old and have several "friends" who are female, thus "girlfriends. None of them are in a "romantic" way.
I also have several male friends that are "friends" and absolutely are nothing more than just a friend who happens to be a male so I guess or "boy" friends just because they are "male". So if you feel me referring to my new dog pup as a girlfriend is weird, oh well, it is what it is. Please go about your day doing what you do and try to have a bit more sense of humor and lighten up and enjoy life. Sorry if my reference to my pup as a "girl....friend triggered you.
