It might have been a State police officer, not that it matters, my memory of it is that the officer was out of his car in a struggle with the suspect, and even though he had shot him once in the gut, the guy was trying to get the officers firearm, the Samaritan shot him several times, but the last shot to the head took him down. The samaritan was not charged, but was sued by the family of the attacker. It cost him something like $30-50 grand in legal fees to defend himself, and apparently the police, NRA, or anyone else did anything to help him with the financial burden.

As I recall the guy who did the shooting was charged, but ultimately cleared of wrongdoing. The charge was leveled against him because he witnessed the altercation, then went to his truck to get his gun, returned to the altercation and discharged his shotgun. The argument was that because he didn't have his gun on him at the time, his actions couldn't be viewed as an immediate threat to his life therefor he committed murder.

He was cleared of criminal charges, but the cost of his defense broke him and then the family of the dead guy was successful in getting a civil judgement against him... guy lost everything: family, home, job, etc.

At least that's how I remember it... though I could be completely mixing two different events here.

Your family is not some special legal category. It falls under defense of others, which strangers also fall under. You show that that your had an objectively reasonable fear of loss of life or serious injury to the other and your action were taken to prevent that. The verbiage is varies amongst states, but that basically it in a nutshell.
