back when i was a lowly auto parts sales worker turning drums & rotors and pressing axle bearings, along with mixing automotive paint. i used to sell a lot of shite for cj5 jeeps.

Engage it once a month or so. Drive a short distance in 4WD to spin those components around and move the lubricant.
I recommend this while my pickup is 4WD and almost 2-years old. I think I've engaged it twice.
