re: Golf board: cutting down your shafts?

Even taller people are going with shorter driver shafts
They help improve accuracy without a huge effect on distance
Shaft length on other clubs is more important for a proper fit than it is for driver IMO

another quick note, those reporting major losses in distance due to shortening a shaft is not the norm. It is possible that shortening a shaft could reduce the speed the club travels, BUT most of the time golfers will increase ball speed because they are hitting the ball closer to the center of the face thus increasing smash factor. Ball speed numbers are 100x more important than swing speed numbers.

I usually cut all mine down to 45" or 44.5". Since cutting from the butt, little effect in stiffness. Swing weight is affected though.

As others have said, it's better to just choke down than cut off an inch or so. You could make a mark on the grip where you want your hands to be if you want to be consistent

I know it's your opinion but I think you're wrong.
The driver is longest and least lofted club in the bag and if it doesn't match the person (fit wise), the shots are going to be the most offline. You can have the best iron game in town but if you're hitting your 2nd shot from the woods.....see where I'm going?

Janky what did you cut that shaft I got from you down to? I have no idea how long it is but it fits me well. I'm 6'3" fwiw and I'll have a hard time taking that club out of my bag

What I meant was there is not so much a hard and fast rule for a proportion of driver shaft length to a persons height
It's way more important for an iron to be the proper length
A person can mold their swing to a longer/shorter driver more easily than they can to irons that are too long/short

Don't remember but I think it plays 44.5

I'm 5-9 and I lengthened mine by 3/4 inch and picked up another 10-15 yards on average. I added a small piece of lead tape to offset the change on the back of the head.
Why would you shorten the club? You really want as much clubhead speed as you can confidently generate. Shortening will reduce this.

I am going to challenge this statement. Lets take the first part, Assuming a stock 45" driver adding .75" added approx. +4.5 swing weight points, then you added lead tape to the head (say 2grams) thus increasing the swing weight another 1 point. So now you have added +5.5 swing weight points and have a driver measuring 45.75". So you created a sledgehammer that by the laws of physics you can not swing as fast as the driver at 45" measuring and 5.5 swing weight points less thus reducing your club head speed. So your reduced club head speed but picked up 10-15 yds? To gain 10 yards you would need to increase your ball speed by 5mph, which I question

You said what I was thinking, but a lot more technically
I find it almost not worth questioning anything I read on the site

I'm 6'3. I learned to play golf with my mother's clubs and used them the first 20 years or so that I played golf. Then I got some custom fit clubs. My game didn't fall of much but it wasn't the same as when I used those shorter clubs. I have gradually learned to choke down on the shaft and stand closer to the ball. In the end, I should do what you are asking - cut down the shaft.
