I think others have said, and I will reiterate, if you're going for IT, degree isn't the path for you.

Learn on your own time and get Certs instead. You have to pick an initial path, but I would go with the fundamentals... networking to start, then some sysadmin stuff, etc. You don't need to drop a lot of dollars if you're smart and diligent.

The market for IT is usually contractor based, but can get you the experience as well. Once you know your space of what you want to do, then dive all-in. That could be infrastructure, networking, devops, etc.

IT is all going to India and Mexico now. I would only value the basic certs as fundamental for a project management track which is still, mostly, at least for now, solidly American. But even that is changing. I would not recommend an IT track for any American right now. It's all being offshored, even the stuff they said 5 years ago would never be offshored due to security or language barriers, is being offshored now. And the stuff they say they'll never offshore today, they will be in five years. Sucks but it is the truth.

I wouldn’t go for the business degree.

So I agree with you but also disagree, if you allow me.

If you want to be a help desk, etc. then don't go IT.

If you can bring intelligent value - IT space - to business, your job is safe.

The menial jobs are being outsourced....yes. But if you've ever worked with an overseas contractor, you'd know that they are really good on executing whatever you ask for. They are not, however, good at thinking through a task and suggesting improvements/changes as they go. I know that might not sound that important, but people with the ability to logically think through stuff before executing will always have a job in tech.

This.

And good way to express. You don't have changes to infrastructure without real thought. Help desks and menial IT are for sure outsourced due to simple economics.

I agree Kenny, but the industry does not.

Definitely worth it. I went back in my late 20’s much easier the second go around, amazing what a little maturity will do. Try night classes (if they still have that), mostly older students. Good luck to ya.

I went back at 26, took the scenic route and graduated at 32. Didn't have a plan so bounced around a bit until I got a tech sales job at 34 and life was grand ever since.

I'd say avoid business management. It translates to nothing real and is purely a young man's game. Ageism is real in that regard. On the IT side there's almost no such thing that I've been able to perceive and the demand is much more real. That's the route I'd go.

Don’t be ashamed op, this is why degree jobs have been sought after. I’m sick of these guys in comfortable desk jobs telling people to do go in to the trades.

Yeah when I quit college I didn’t consider the physical toll it would take in my body to work 69 hours a week every week. My first choice was engineering and will most likely go that route. Hearing from other engineers how hard some of the classes can be had me reconsidering. However, I could literally pay my truck off before the fall and work part time if needed and still get by.

I worked off shore. Got shook out in the 80’s. Was a lineman before and after hurricane Andrew. Just couldn’t see climbing poles in Louisiana summer heat when I was 60.
Went back to school and never looked back. Dive in. Don’t try and half step it. You’ll enjoy it more if you dive in full time and try and take the whole experience in.

I went back to school for my degree at 28 Full time at Tulane.

I gave it all I had and am so glad I did it.

However you do it (PT, online, etc), wherever you do it, just give it 100% effort. You’ll do great.

Would you bite the bullet and go back to school knowing your 30s will be over basically by the time you earn a bachelors?

Went back to school around the same age as you to get my associates in IT and it has made a world of difference for me. Get the degree and pick up some certificates in AWS/GCP/Azure.

Don't worry about being the old man on campus. College kids don't care how old you are, I hang out with a 21 year old and 27 year old on campus everyday. I had class with a girl as young as 17 and I have been older than a few professors. Quite literally, nobody cares about age.
