I think there are insecticides you can use. I've never lived in an area that was a hot zone for them.
Newer neighborhoods see lots of them. When they build the newer homes they dig up areas that were the homes of the scorpions.....causing them to look for shelter elsewhere. Also.....if you love right by the mountains here you will see more of them.
Friend of mine lives in a nice part of north Scottsdale. Newer development. She sees bobcats, coyotes, rattlesnakes, and scorpions in her backyard all the time.

Nurse was a little cutie-patootie back in her day, I don't know why she doesn't give the darker hair a try again. Keeping up with that drastic difference of a color has to be a pain.
ETA: she is wearing the Mexican flag, shouldn't have been a surprise to anyone when she moved to North Mexico
