Is it just bullshite TV or is there really people hunting ginseng in the woods?
I know the production is bullshite just never heard of ginseng

It's a tradition in the Appalachians, but cooking meth is alot easier and more profitable so things like ginseng hunting and moonshining are becoming lost arts.

people do it, but not nearly to the sensationalized extent that the series portrays it. there are some plants that grow in Louisiana that have marketable roots as well...I used to dig and sell them when I was very young. pretty quickly realized that there are much easier ways to make money, though.

It's pretty common. My dad hunts it. You can make decent money, but it's nothing like the show

Yes, and make a few bucks in the process. Its not just a walk through the woods though. Most of the time it is found in deep hollers and on hillsides.

Guilty I believe.
But I must admit the case was not strong. I think he definitely did it (with help), but he was convicted on emotion more than evidence.

Me and my dad used to hunt ginseng in north Georgia every year when I was a kid. Made pretty decent money on the side.

Just about every state has something in the forest worth money and people that find it.
In my area it is quartz crystals. Hard work digging them but if they are nice the pay off can be huge.

You can make a lot of money off ginseng but you have to have the right buyers. Plus the age of the ginseng root and size plays the biggest role. The older the root, the more it is worth (generally).
However there is a factor in Korea that does the red ginseng and their researchers found that roots 4-7 years old were the most desirable. In the US we have a different type of ginseng that is closer to the white ginseng rather than the red.
Ginseng is excellent for energy and have many other great qualities for the body. It is a great plant.

Not sure about the ginseng guys. Here in central Arkansas if you are in the crystal business you either have your own mine or poach them off of government land.
The government has made it nearly impossible to find a deposit of quartz and stake your own claim which use to be common practice. Now if you stake a claim and it makes it through all the enviro red tape then the claim goes up for sealed bid. So if people find a good deposit on national forest land they just keep their mouth shut and hand dig as much as possible.
About 4 years ago discovery studios signed all the local miners to contracts and shot a pilot. Nothing ever came of it but it was interesting being followed around by camera crews for a while. And yes... it is fake as you would imagine.
