I think it has to do with a change in environment more than anything. Everyone is sitting and doing whatever to occupy their time so when they hand out snacks, its a break from whatever people have been doing for awhile.

And how much can you really stuff your face with the little snacks they do give?

The last flight I was on offered two options, some type of peanut butter crackers or some fig newton type snack and a plastic cup with either water, coke or sprite. I don't think I really ever paid attention to what other people ate, etc. Does that really bother you?
