Getting a job in fast food or at a grocery store

What is the best way to go about this?
It's not for me, its for my cousin who just turned 16 and wants to save up to buy a car.

Does it still work this way? I heard that most places do online applications now. Is that the case for fast rood and grocery store work?

References? For fast food/grocery work? My cousin is 16, he hasn't had a job yet to get references.

I still see people come in and ask for applications in person.
I think some places have little kiosks where you fill out the application on a computer screen.

Probably still will ask for some type of reference, even if it's just a character reference.

You're on the internet right now, seems 20 seconds with google could tell you everything about your local fastfood or grocery store and if they do online applications.

Subway's a cake job because you really don't have to handle any hot items and it's pretty hard to mess up an order when the customer is standing two feet in front of you telling you what they want

Take this for what you will, but I have always rolled the dice on hiring kids that have more than 18 months of fast food experience.
Given that work has an insane amount of turn around, it looks good for young adults to have a healthy amount of experience working a job most people won't do for more than 6 weeks.
He can save money for the car and show future employers he isn't afraid of work.
