Even with shorter generations, most researchers are in agreement that the millenial generation goes through about 2000 (that's kind of why they got the generational nickname "millenial ... because they were born at around the turn of the millenium).

No, most of us (those born between 1981-92) were growing up at the turn of the millennium, then most demographers added another 5 years (1993-97).

Most researchers have them being born between the early 80s and the late 2000s.

WTF?

Even those that list the early 80s babies as millenials classify them as a sub-generation because they are very different from those born later.

I'd probably put 1990 as the "dividing line" there.

My man.

Did you become disenfranchised with rock music with the emergence of grunge, or did you embrace grunge?

I'm a millenial. This makes not one iota of difference in my life.. I don't really understand why everyone cares so much about this stuff. 65 year old cavemen were probably complaining about the young cavemen back in the day, just like boomers complain about the current generation, just like when I'm old I'm going to complain about the following generations. You get old, you fail to understand the culture and ideals of younger people. It's natural. It happens. I'm only 27 but I already find myself mystified by some of the things I see from the younger generations.

The landscape of our country will always change from one generation to the next, and people hate change. Just because things are different than when you grew up doesn't mean they're any worse; it means values have changed and the other generation looks at the world differently than you did. It's all just the ebb and flow of life.

Good post, Hulk. Well said and well worded. But you guys are a little soft.

That's an awful chart. People born before 84 have nothing in common with Millenials

I wasn't completely clear in my explanation. The researchers who coined the term chose it because the first year of the new generation (82) would be graduating in the millenium, however they also categorized any one who was born after that up through the turn of the millenium. The authors who coined the term cite 82-2004, but there are obviously other researchers that disagree, and there is a range, which is why I, an early 80's baby, even stated that I wasn't sure exactly which generation I fit in.

Typo - I was doing too many things at once and it's been a long week.

But that's okay. Generation X is used to being ignored, stuffed between two much larger, much more vocal, demographics. But whatever! Generation X is self-sufficient. It was a latchkey child. Its parents were too busy fulfilling their own personal ambitions to notice any of its trophies-which were admittedly few and far between because they were only awarded for victories, not participation.

fricking brilliant.

Uh oh. 1977 and later being Millennials is going to cause some butthurt.... Some of the posters from earlier are likely to be bitchass Millennials themselves.....

This is the breakdown I've always known.

The talk of Gen X lasting until 84 is news to me.

It seems like every study or survey uses different years. The average is probably 81/82.

That's a great chart. That's the defining difference between mine and next generation currently in college. We crave freedom. They crave security and will get violent with anyone who threatens this. It is the defining difference. My generation seeks to break the chain that binds us, but the next generation simply want to put in as many as possible in the name of "safety".

I don't think it's important to nail down exact beginning & ending years. As someone posted earlier, it's about shared experiences. Your chart is better in that it provides more mile markers than just DOB. A older gen Y could have easily been influenced by and older sibling and/or neighborhood group of friends and, therefore, identifies with Gen X much more strongly than they Gen Y box they've been born into.

Some people have taken this light-hearted post much more personally and seriously than needed or warranted. No one limits their choice of friends to or from a particular Gen slot. However, there are definitive differences in shared experiences, communication methods and life goals between people of different gen groups. This is funny to joke about among multi-generational friends and actually kind of helps us communicate better.

Don't call me. I'm not answering. Don't have time to chat and if I did I just want to enjoy silence for a moment. Don't post my personal shite on social media. And, holy crap, why would you FaceTime me? Text me.

I've never face-timed in my life. If someone tried to do that to me, I'd actually get angry.

Meh. If you keep young slampieces, you have to adapt with the times.
