I don't know what the refining cost is, but it isn't much. 30 or 40¢ per gallon, tops.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is considering a request to allow oil refineries to sell ethanol-free gasoline. The request was sent to the EPA last week by the governors of five oil producing states: Louisiana, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming.

The majority of fuel sold in the United States is blended with 10% ethanol, known as E10. This practice began in 1978 with the Clean Air Act, and expanded dramatically in the 2000s. As of 2016, approximately 95% of fuel sold in the US has an ethanol blend of up to 10%.

There is a lot of misinformation on this age. The price of ethanol used to be higher than gasoline and was subsidized by the government but right now prices are vey low, lower than gasoline. Production has been increasing for several years and with gasoline consumption dropping, the demand for fuel ethanol is also dropping. So it is staying lower than gasoline. If you can dilute your product 10% with something cheaper without repercussion, seems like you would do that every time.

Ethanol production in the US.

I don’t understand the article. I can already buy ethanol free gasoline. Why would refineries need to ask permission to sell it when it is already available? Before this virus slowed everything down, I was paying .25 a gallon more for it than the 90/10 blended gas. I haven’t checked the price spread in a while.

Federal tax is ~18¢ per gallon and state tax another 20¢ per gallon. I don't know what the refining cost is, but it isn't much. 30 or 40¢ per gallon, tops. Demand is at a record low. They're fricking us.

Wow you have zero idea what it costs to turn a barrel of crude oil into a gallon of gasoline to fill your car. You think refineries just have unlimited oil for free and then just need to spend 30-40 cents to refine it into gasoline? Get a freaking clue.
