Just had a chamberlain chain drive installed. Replaced a genie screw drive. Guy who's family has been in the business since garage doors were invented said the genies have sold out for cheaper parts in the last ten yrs or so and he deals only with chamberlain.

Both Home depot and Lowe's. The main difference from the base $199 and the Premium &169 and up models id the wall control panels. The base has a door bell looking button vs the ones that turn on the lights only and can Lock out operation while on vacation. and some have an outside wireless panel that most never use.

Get one with a battery back up in case the power is out. Chamberlain makes them. Or they may all have them now. Mine is about 4-5 years old.

I just had mine changed to a Chamberlain with belt drive and battery backup. Very quiet. I did hook up the smartphone app, but don't see much use for it yet.

I use it to make sure my forgetful wife closes the door when she leaves for work. And if she forgets I can close it from my phone.

the door is easy as can be, it's like legos, the only critical thing is the spring, it can frick you up, also, Genie openers are trash, see if you can find a heavy-lift, they're considered the best out there now
ETA: re-read, replacing the opener is a piece of cake, you should already have a 110 outlet there so that's a plug in, the rest is low voltage bell wire, you should be able to use the existing wire, not necessary to mess with the spring to change the opener

Thanks! The wiring was my chief area of concern. Good to know going into this.

Have you thought about fixing the old one? I have an old craftsman opener and the gears stripped the threads on a piece inside the unit. Just had to order the part and replace it. Was pretty simple and only cost about $20.

also this, assemble the opener on the floor, you can use bungees to temporarily hold it sort of in place on the existing pre-punch mounting strips, then attach the track to the header and go back to the head and mount it to the pre-punch, one person job, you will have to tighten tension on the chain, maybe a little more than a finger width from the track, wire it up, and your good to go

The problem with changing the gear is the mother boards usually go right after. It might last forever and might die the next day. Happens a lot.

We just had this exact system installed about 2 months ago. quieter as frick, operates smoothly, and the wifi and in house monitor is awesome. Twice the wife has remembered she forgot to shut it after we went upstairs and was able to shut it from the monitor without having to put any clothes on to go back downstairs and open the house door to hit the button.

I replaced mine this week. I bought a Chamberlain, and it runs quietly. The instruction booklet is fairly straightforward, so installation is relatively easy. It took me a few hours to get it up and running. 
I'd say it's a two-man job.

Easy. Just buy one that is for a 7 ft door. Check model as the new one have a different mount and rail assbly. You should be able to buy theodel that is a direct bolt up to your existing

Thanks for all the input! Bought a Chamberlain belt drive to replace my old Chamberlain model. It took me 4.5 hrs because it was too easy? Really, the instructions were solid, just took my time. I usually make the mistake with multiple pages and don't find it til 3 steps down, so went slow and made zero errors. Old wiring and safety sensors saved me more time!
