His parents send him a little money if he's in a jam (beats paying for private college that he doesn't get anything out of). He has a summer job where he saved a little. He also plays guitar on street corners for tips. They seem to be getting by.

I dont think 18 is the year you need to go spelunking around foreign countries.
I am in favor of 18 year olds getting out into the workforce, maybe trying their hand at entrepreneurship in some regards. I am still sad I could not join the military when I graduated HS(I have ear problems and dont have perfect vision..wanted to be a pilot).
An 18 year old boy should do some construction/manual labor, if anything to toughen him up and teach him some work skills.
