I agree, and the ability to choose by the business owner solves this issue, in my view

This is why it is a waste of time to debate this issue: the question is already answered. Smoking should be banned in all public places, period.
so debate with you is also pointless because your mind is already irrecoverably made up

ignore that the SMOKER ALSO CHOSE TO GO INTO THAT SAME BAR.
nobody is ignoring this. We can all.agree that everyone knows the risk of smoking. I am for allowing adults to make their own decisions. You appear to approve a nanny state.

quote:

“If you can’t deal with it, you can go to another place” ... we have a word for that. It’s called selfishness.
again, that works both ways. Flips the script, and you get the same answer

It’s why government exists.
no. Government exists to serve the people as the people see fit

Your freedom to smoke is infringing upon my freedom to breathe
then contact your legislator and put group together to make it illegal

But you won't. You will continue to pointlessly bitch on a message board

Yeah no shite? It’s a smoking bar so of course the smoker would choose to go to that one. Just as the non smoker would rationally make the decision to go to a non smoking bar.

It’s called letting people make their own choices and letting the market decide which is the right one for the business owners

This ban in June will expand our liberties. The vast majority of the population who doesn’t smoke will be able to breathe in public again. The minority who does smoke can still smoke at home, or even a certain distance from the public place. It’s an expansion of liberties whether you believe it or not. Also, the recent lift on the prohibition of sports betting is a good example of an expansion of liberty. The lifting of the federal ban on gay marriage is another one. It’s an expansion of liberty even if you don’t like it. Government makes rules for society, not for just you.

I don’t see the connection between telling people they can’t do something and telling business owners they aren’t allowed to market to a certain part of the market and two personal freedom issues that are being resolved by the Government giving you choices you didn’t previously have (being able to gamble, or marrying whoever you want)

In fact I believe they are completely opposing ideals

Just another reason to avoid Baton Rouge. Lake Charles has better casinos anyway

Come on

Come the hell on

Can say the same for the eating and drinking habits of anyone. You do seem to be all about the nanny state, and that is your perrogative.

My mind is not irrecoverably made up. You’re acting like this is a debate. There is no debate.
read that. Just read it.

You are not worth having any level of discussion on this topic

The government has mostly been blowing smoke up our asses about the dangers of 2nd hand smoke. This came out a few years ago but wasn't widely publicized.

quote:

A large-scale study found no clear link between secondhand smoke and lung cancer, undercutting the premise of years of litigation including a Florida case that yielded a $350 million settlement.

quote:

The article in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute details a study of 76,000 women over more than a decade, which found the usual link between smoking and cancer. Lung cancer was 13 times more common in current smokers, and four times more common in former smokers, than in non-smokers.

quote:

The study found no statistically significant relationship between lung cancer and exposure to passive smoke, however. Only among women who had lived with a smoker for 30 years or more was there a relationship that the researchers described as "borderline statistical significance."

You can eat a quarter pounder meal every day of your life from McDonald’s and still lose weight. EVERY whiff of tobacco smoke, from all involved, is ALWAYS harmful. There are 70 cancer-causing compounds in tobacco smoke whether you inhale your cigarette or I do.

But but but.... murica!

The idiots in this thread somehow think it is a rights issues and are ignoring the issue of what is being banned.

It is like arguing that it should be legal to serve listeria because free market will eventually sort out the restaurants.

That's the second time you've linked that one article that you think should supercede many many more studies and articles.

fallguy is going on record that second hand smoke is fine.

I love when someone takes such a stance.

I'll get you another one baw.

It now turns out that the influential 1993 EPA report “Respiratory Health Effects of Passive Smoking: Lung Cancer and Other Disorders” was as phony as a three-dollar bill. State officials and private businesses that believed that ETS was a public health danger (and not just a nuisance) were completely misled by the EPA. And, of course, so was main street American public opinion.

People in this thread are talking about freedom. One of the core libertarian tenets of freedom, as stated by political philosophers like John Stuart Mill, is that people should be left to themselves so long as their actions do not hurt others.

I agree, and people who do not venture to smoking bars be it by work or fun are not exposed to second hand smoke.

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You can still make room for everyone by allowing the free market to work these things out, and they already do with smoke free and smoke friendly establishments. Now, for those places where one has to access like government buildings and the like, I agree that they should be smoke free, but these kinds of restrictions do not allow for freedom and liberty in the slightest. They kill it.

I linked a list of smoke free bars in BR earlier. There were already tons of them, many some of the more popular places in the city.
