MCAS El Toro was the best. In the middle is Orange County before it became like the rest of liberal SoCal. The worst was MCB Twenty Nine Palms/Stumps.

Shemya right? An older coworker at a former job was stationed there in the sixties. Maybe some of it was tall tales but he made it sound like the island of lost souls. The wind howled all the time. The beach was off limits because rogue waves could wash you out to sea. No trees, and no animals except birds and some rodents. The rec hall burned down so there was even less to do. An airliner made an emergency landing and they posted armed guards to keep guys from trying to stow away. After a year he got orders for Vietnam and considered himself lucky.
Yes. Your old coworker wasn’t exaggerating much. Maybe with the state away part of the story but that place was hell.

Best, when active duty was MCAS Futenma on Oki...now a civvie at Hurlburt Field and it is close second.
Worst, Camp Geiger (Lejeune)...had a good time there, but that ain't saying much

— Camp Shwab, Okinawa
— Khe Sanh, RSVN
Guess which one was worse.

Top 2
Jax NAS, FL (was young and single)
Misawa, Japan (great food/people)
Bottom 2
Oceana, VA (melting pot, lots of issues)
Miramar, CA (too many reasons to list)
I had so much fun in Jax. Japan was awesome for all the customs and sightseeing and eating. Made some great friends with Japanese nationals. Talked a rich local (who worked on base) into opening a McDonalds. Took him on a trip to another city to try it. He liked it so much he bought a cooler and went back and bought a shitload of burgers and brought back for friends/family. He made bank by opening one after all the red tape. It cost him 1,800,000 yen for the franchise fee, at the time that was around $600,000 US equivalent.

Ft Stewart, GA
fricking mechanized infantry division.
Fat-frick, 32 oz 7-11 coffee drinking mech losers.
Shithole Redneck Hinesville outside the gate.
Worst 18 months of my 20 yr service.
Bright side was that I PCSed to Schofield Barracks, HI for the next 4 years.

Bragg both the best and worst, All Americans rarely leave.

quote:Arifjan? I thought it was pretty sweet. Midnight chow at the main dfac, all kinds of shitty American fast food, a pool, a PX, hot showers and laundry trailers, females. Other than booze it had everything you could hope for on a SWA deployment.
Worst: tie -- Camp Shelby, Mississippi, and whatever the hell that staging base was in Kuwait (hottest place on the planet

Lejeune was all ticks, mosquitoes, snakes, bad water…
Enjoyed 29 Stumps despite repeated flash floods that carried away equipment, 128 degree temps, but accessible to San Diego, Tiajuna.

I'm Air Force, 1 July is my retirement date.
Best Base: MacDill AFB, FL. It's home for me, we have 2 Joint combatant commands, and the base is beautiful on Tampa Bay.
Worst Base: Robins AFB, GA. Crappy base is in a shithole town south of a ghetto arse city (Macon). Leadership sucked overall.

From a kid's point of view, Kaneohe MCAS in Hawaii was the perfect place to grow up.
Went to the beach behind the house almost every day.
