The Russian air force just pulled off one of the biggest and most complex heavy bomber missions in modern history—sending no fewer than 25 Backfire, Bear, and Blackjack bombers on a coordinated, long-range air raid against alleged ISIS forces in Syria.
Only 25? That doesn't seem very impressive.

How many heavy bombers do you think we put in on any single mission? This is not the 1940's where hundreds or even thousands of bombers are used in a single mission.

Sadly, they can't. While the collapse of the Soviet Union in 91 basically brought down the Red Army with it, all the European powers likewise cut back their own armed forces is a massive degree. And while Russia has been rearming for years now, Europe has not. Even the U.S. has massively scaled back it's military power there. We still have some air power there. But from a ground combat standpoint we're pathetically weak. All that's left on a permanent basis is one armored cavalry regiment in Germany (and it doesn't even have any tanks) and one airborne infantry brigade in Italy.
Cool but invading and occupying the Balkans would be an enormous logistical undertaking and I strongly doubt that Russia is up to that task when facing all of Europe. Just think of the supply lines that would be involved. There's no way that Russia can manage that.

So what. We have the best navy and it's not even close. Just think of what other countries must think of us when we continue to strengthen our navy when no other country can challenge us.

That we're stupidly bankrupting ourselves.

Why do you emphasize "heavy bombers" like it matters whether the sorties are being flown by heavy bombers or other aircraft?

edit: The US is responsible for over 7,000 strikes since the beginning of Operation Inherent Resolve, which began in June 2014. That's strikes, not sorties. There have been over 60,000 sorties flown by the US and partners throughout the operation, though I'm not sure how many of those are from the US. I'd guess the overwhelming majority are. So 25 sorties in one mission from Russia doesn't seem that amazing.

It's instructive that Russia had trouble fighting massive forest fires in Siberia two summers ago because so many trucks were tied up supporting its Ukrainian adventure.

The only question that matters is "Can we still track all their subs?"

I suggest you go read up on the current armed forces of Europe and compare that to Russia.

(Spoiler: it's not even close)

Plus, if Europe were to piss off Russia, the Russians would simply cut off Europe's gas supply and they'd be fricked.

I'm guessing you don't comprehend the difference between launching tactical and strategic bombers.

But what is Putin's handicap? Obama needs to work on his sand game, he seems to have an aversion to sand.

You think that the type of aircraft being flown makes a difference in whether the mission is tactical vs strategic?

You aren't making much sense, and it's because you're giving one sentence responses without much substance. Flying 25 sorties in a day is good, but it's not amazing, and it's not something that's so uncommon that it only occurs once every few decades. I'd be surprised if this isn't a routine occurrence for the US.

I don't see why it matters whether the sorties being flown are by heavy bombers or by any other aircraft capable of launching airstrikes. If it can launch an airstrike, it can launch an airstrike.

According to that link, there were about 35 airstrikes launched. That's good, but again, not really that incredible.

Sometime in 2011ish, I was talking to a man that was on US nuclear submarines in the late 80's and early 90's. I assumed our sub technology was far superior to the Russians; he said otherwise. He stated that, besides some special propeller, the Russian subs were more advanced than our own.

That was scary. He was talking about the same time that the news was calling us Gods of War.

Before you say he was just an idiot sailor, this man is now a well respected IP attorney.

You are really downplaying the importance of maintaining secure supply lines. Either that, or you're grossly overestimating Russia's ability to maintain them. I can't tell which.

I also can't tell if you're a chronic pessimist or if you're just on Putin's nuts. If shutting off Europe's gas supply is such a great idea, why didn't Russia try it at the height of the Ukraine crisis? Hint: it's because it's not actually that great of an idea for Russia to do that.

This Balkans invasion scenario is silly because there is no reason for Russia to even try it, but it's especially silly because Russia couldn't succeed even if they really wanted to. You are vastly overestimating them.

1. Who supplies Central Europe with the vast majority of its natural gas?

2. What military force exists in Europe today that could stop a Rissian invasion? I'd like to see you list their order of battle along with Russia's.

3. Do you honestly not know why Russia would have its eye on expanding (again) into the Balkins?

So you think Russia can obliterate almost all of its trade with the world ( LINK ), invade the Balkans against significant resistance (see NATO), maintain 500+ mile supply lines through hostile territory, and successfully occupy the entire Balkans (over 250,000 sq miles or roughly the size of Texas, and containing 60 million people, which is about 40% of Russia's population)?

Shutting off gas is a lame threat because Russia is as dependent on that trade as Europe is. Good luck to Russia if they want to pay for this insane war you're proposing. The cost would vastly outweigh the reward, which is why your scenario is just silly.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

I'll ask you again. Post the order of battle of the force in Europe you think could stop them. Along side that, post Russia's forces.

ETA: Europe wild be fricked over the winter without gas from Russia. They're totally dependent on them for it.
