OSB is cheaper than foam FYI

Than styrofoam? Maybe in material costs but I'd doubt it's cheaper in the end when you factor in construction costs and schedule.

Huh? At $5+ per sheet more it would take quite a bit to offset the additional cost. The foam isn't going to magically nail itself to the studs and there's not going to be much of a labor difference in the two.

At best, it would be a break even, but in no way is foam cheaper to put up than OSB at the current prices.

I firmly believe the builders that are using foam that I have talked to aren't doing it because they are making more money, they really think the R value is worth it and the corner bracing is sufficient for our area. Having said that, I am going to take Stout's advice and use all OSB.

So they'd do it to just to increase the R-control value?

Sounds absurd to me, but what do I know.

maybe i was misunderstanding what he was saying. I was thinking he was saying you osb the outside and the inside. I am a civil engineer too and get the lateral bracing, just didn't really understand what the point of doing it on the inside and outside. Sure its a lot stronger but not really needed. But thinking about it, from a heating cooling point I'm sure it would help.

i had never even heard of people not using osb and using Styrofoam. That blows my mind.

just seeing this thread but I could use some more insulation in my attic. It has just basic blown in insulation that is roughly 20 years old. I'd like to add some insulation to but dont know exactly what I want as I will install it. Im thinking of just getting some open faced roll insulation and lay it on top of my existing insulation. I'd like to do the radiant barrier but my attic ceiling is way to high for me to get on a ladder so I'll probably just skip that.

Dont do the rolls. It will be more work and wont work well. Blow more in. Probably cheaper also
