HEB does this too. They have some stores practically across from another on some heavily trafficked Houston highways and roads, that folks will not want to turn left on during peak hrs..
These sometimes are strip mall locations at the base of master-planned communities loaded with Fortune 500 employees. Fierce competition and circular ads wars for these families grocery dollars vs Kroger, etc..
I forget how many HEBs there are from First Colony Mall to Sienna Plantation in Sugarland//Mo City? Especially Stafford to Sienna Parkway along Hwy 6?
NYC, LA, Vegas, have some fast food places that utilize similar strategy in areas of mass humanity and/or traffic flows.

It is like this in Gadsden AL.
One in the mall food court and another directly across the street. Both generate a ridiculous amount of traffic.

Tuscaloosa for years has had a Chick Fil A in the mall, and one outside the mall across the highway. Plus there are 2 on the University of Alabama campus.
The closest of similar chains, not inside a mall, etc., that I know of here are two Jimmy Johns near campus that are about 1/2 mile apart, as the crow flies.
