Fox35 Orlando
If there is truth to the "friend's uncle's sister-in-law heard from someone...." stories, maybe we will get some explanation.
Fox35 Orlando is doing what most other news outlets are refusing to do, actually investigating all the bullshite we keep hearing.

How does someone test positive for coronavirus if they have never been tested? Reports of this happening have been pouring into FOX 35 News since we began investigating COVID-19 data.

“For that to come back positive, when there was no specimen submitted, is problematic, so I’ve heard it enough to be concerned about it,” said Governor Ron DeSantis, State of Florida, “I asked the Department of Health to look at that because I heard it too if you can give us, if people that have told you that are willing to provide their name, we’re interested in investigating this because it’s ridiculous.”

Has Idaho been plagued by gross incompetence and/or fraud like Florida has in the past month?

Hence, the investigation.
The article actually has doctors speculating on what the problem is that is leading to the false results being sent. That is more statement or acknowledgement of a problem than we've seen thus far.

Not sure. I got tired of hearing people repeat this same rumor, so I googled and found this article a couple weeks ago. It’s ALWAYS the exact same story: someone registers for the test, leaves the line because they got tired of waiting, then gets a call saying they are positive. And it’s always 2nd or 3rd hand information.

Yeah, that's been the knock on it for a while. Evidently, in FL there is enough smoke for the governor to call for an investigation. Added to the lab frickery and the person with covid who died from a pre-existing motorcycle wreck being added to the totals, nothing surprises me.

Unrelated but I know a woman who was hospitalized because of a really bad kidney stone that she was unable to pass and they tested her for covid and it was negative. Well, they said it could have been a false negative and she is currently being roomed on the covid floor while receiving covid test every day lol
