Back to the topic at hand

Bought Ducksnbass Jr. a 1992 Jeep Cherokee because it's what he wanted and it only cost me two grand. (We've had to do a little work on it, but not much) Figure I'll get him something newer when he goes to college. He doesn't ask for much anyway, and makes good grades.

Tentative plan is to buy a reasonable car new a few years before she gets her license. She'd be able to learn to drive on the car, and we'd know the maintenance and what not.

Still 10 years away form that though so who knows what the vehicle market looks like then.

How come? If they know how to manage time they should also have time to work in addition to school and other activities.
In high school I got done with class at 3, had sports and other activities until as late as 11 some days, the earliest being 5 every day. Then there's homework. Then there's leisure time for a goddamn high school kid. These are all more important than a $7/hr job.

That’s kind of how we’re going about it. When my son graduates high school in May we’re going to buy him a new truck now that he’s proven he can be responsible.

So no part time after school job to help them learn how to budget money and pay bills? Just wait until they’re grown and send them out in the world without them ever learning how to function as an adult? Great parenting right there.

The can learn all of that from an allowance. I'd rather they focus on making good grades and earning a scholarship. Summer jobs are fine.

school ends at 3

sports/clubs ends at 5

what time are they supposed to do homework, eat dinner, sleep, etc?

are you making a 16 year old work the graveyard shift?

My son will be 16 in two years and I am thinking about a 5-6 year old Tacoma. So I guess about a 2016 model with 100k or more miles.

My 18 year old daughter drives a 2013 Sonata Limited that was my wife’s for 5 years. She is very active in dance, cheered two sports(but is now done.) She works about 20 hours a week at Chic Fil A to pay for her gas and spending money. I will expect my son to do the same.

My oldest is about to be 21 and she drove the same Sonata for a year before she went to college. She is in her 3rd year at Georgia Tech working towards a Chemical & Bio-Molecular Engineer degree. She lives on campus in a sorority house and works 2 side jobs as a research assistant and also at the student center help desk. She doesn’t need a car and doesn’t want one because she wouldn’t drive around midtown anyway. I am in Midtown at least 3 days a week and can get her anything that she needs. She only comes home about 5 times a year so I just pick her up and take her back as needed. We live 45 miles from the school.

I have one more daughter who is 9 and she will likely get a 5-6 year old car as well when she is 16 and will be expected to have a little skin in the game just like her siblings.

I guarantee these posters' kids don't work an after school job. Just a bunch of boomer posturing.

That $7/hour grocery store job is the difference between your kid being a shithead or not, obviously

My son was born in 2009. I bought him a 2010 Camaro SS. It's got about 2000 miles on it right now. It basically sits in a garage and I drive it every few months. I don't think it will be his first car but I will give it to him when he's old enough to handle it.

My son has 3 baseball games after school and 1 on Saturday this week. They have a total of 35 varsity games this season. Not including playoffs. With the games, practice and schoolwork, when is he supposed to fit in a part time job making $7.50/hour?

I learned more bad things from the trashy people I worked with at my part time job than I ever did at school
