We use ours pretty much daily. Certainly not a "need," but makes going to friends'' houses/pool etc easier. Plus just cruising around is fun.

Do you live rural or far out suburbs?

We live in a golf community and drive it on weekends...keeps miles off the cars.

Plus, It’s just fun as shite to ride around in on a nice day.

Would the answer to that question somehow change what I posted?

Makes zero sense. A Honda Big Red back in the day went for $3k and could do work. People are idiots now

What I liked about the 80s atvs was the lightness. You could have a 4x4 atv that was easy to manhandle out of a rough spot. Many times I nearly rolled mine and was able to just shove it off myself. The new ones are lead bricks.

I've got a early 90s king quad 300. Its got 15 forward gears and 3 reverse with mechanical diff lock yet is still light weight. It's the most capable quad I've ever owned.

Ohh yeah..we were pose to be talking about golf carts. I've seen the newer models which are basically side by sides now.

I might consider taking up golf if they let me use my king quad as a cart.

I am putting together a solar set up now, one of the places had a great interest rate so I got a proposal.. fine print... 9.9% origination fee!!! I started looking around, all the small personal loans are 5-10% origination fees these days. WTF. Of course there is no prepayment penalty, you got your interest up front. I know this is low for the OT, but 770 is my lowest FICO.

So about $10,500 for it. Not worth that for a golf cart. Just can't see any situation where I get $10,500 of use out of a golf cart.

We live in a private community that allows golf carts. Comes in pretty handy taking the kids to the neighborhood pool and not having to worry about changing into dry clothes to get into a car when its time to leave. Gets a lot of use visiting friends in the neighborhood or just cruising around when the weather is nice out.

For people who live in a beach town, I can see the golf cart being used more than their car for getting around daily. Most of the golf carts in that $10K price range already have the equipment needed for it to be registered as a "low speed vehicle" aka street legal around town.

I think it hard for people to sort out just by observing. Some are financed to the max but some either make a ton or have family money.

Not everyone with some toys is drowning in debt.

Sounds like your neighbor is making million dollar decisions!

Trading wealth building of future for consumerism cult of today. Opportunity cost is probably closer to 7 figures than he can ever imagine.

They are idiots for sure.. but a Honda ATC200 big red cost about $1400 when it came out in 1982, which in today’s dollars is almost $5000 which is what you can buy a new Honda Recon 250 and it is way more machine and has an extra wheel.

A new $14k atv probably has 1000cc engine and 100hp, which is more than a small pickup truck made in 1982.

I'm feeling old (we lived on a course when I was a kid, Dad was OT rich) I remember Dad paid like $1500 for our first Club Car and then about 2 years later gave that to me and bought a fancy one with lights, radio, ash tray, etc for like $2500.

He paid cash and wouldn't have cared what the guy next door did with his money.
