Depends what you intentions are, sex, dating or something serious beyond that... POF/Cupid/Tinder for quick sex, maybe a few diamonds in the rough, for something beyond that. Pay sites are the only way you're going to weed out the trash, if you're trying to find a soul mate online. If you're old and lazy on going out like me, POF any day of the week and a few stupid lines and being charming, and you're getting laid either the same day or have something line up by the weeks end

Joined Match 9 years ago and got lucky. Was on two weeks and kind of just looked around at profiles and pictures. Finally found one I was interested in and she lived fairly close for Atlanta area. Celebrated our 8th anniversary last week and have 3 children together.
Be patient. Most of the crap in people's profiles are either exaggerated or embellished. Don't stalk but find something in common from their profile and if she is ever online at the same time as you, approach her with the chat option and mention what you have in common. My wife was a UT grad from Alcoa, TN and I my first line was something about how I was interested in meeting her if she could forgive me for the whooping UGA had put on her Vols that year.

frick that! Be a man. Nothing and I mean NOTHING attracks a woman more than self confidence. Keep yourself up, dress respectful and clean (don't run out and buy some sort of Ed Hardy type shite and try to act 22!).
Clean your house, car etc, clean look, confident, and a job and you'll be fine.
You are in control now, make sure the women you approach are up to YOUR standards.
Friends' wives are a good source for leads.
