Being likable, relatable, and resourceful are probably the 3 best qualities to have if you want to get ahead.
I may not always know the answer to the question, but I'll smile, understand why you're asking, and find the answer for you.

That's great advice right there. I pretty much live by the rule that if I don't know how to do it, I will learn how

arse kissing more so than faking it. I've been out of college less than 5 years, and it's hilarious how much of that I see on a daily basis.

It takes a little bit of everything. Knowing the job, creating a certain perception, relationship building, edge and luck. Just faking it won't last forever.

Goes right along with another axiom to live by.. Don't ask for permission, ask for forgiveness.

Well, let's consider our best employee. I am rathernsurenshe gets paid very well. She is intelligent, works many hours more than she is supposed to because she wants to get things right, and she's dependable. She's also probably the last person that would be promoted on our team because her attitude and focus wouldn't make her an ideal candidate and there ain't anything wrong with that. The higher up you get in an organization, the more time is spent in dealing with inner company adversarial problems.
