Just know that being a volunteer coach is an unappreciated gig, that not only will you do for free, but it will probably cost you money. And on top of that, you have to deal with parents and other assholes that know better than you, but don't have the time to help, because they're "too busy". They won't be able to make it to help out for practices, but magically will appear for the games. It's impressive.

MY niece

Do not volunteer to "coach" an entire team so you can solely help a family member. I volunteered for 5 years on the high school level at a school where I had zero family ties. Primarily because I love the sport I was coaching. Family is the worst reason to coach in my opinion.

I found this out the hard way...

Step 1: make sure they are having fun at all costs

Step 2: wait. If it's fun, she'll eventually want to be better, preform better, train better. Then you step in and guide.

I'd let the coach do his thing if she is having fun.

I'm sure it's already been said, but you seem a little off

She is 12 years old, sounds like she had fun.

Your glory days are over bro, quit getting 'PISSED' over a 12 year old girls track meet...

I took an academic scholarship in lieu of an athletic scholarship, so I never ran in college.

No you didn't. If you had even a one true athletic scholarship you would have jumped on it and that's a fact. Blows my mind how many dudes go throughout life spewing this same old line of bulllshit.

Really? A high school sprinter holds the world record?

I played real sports, I wasn't trying to be the best at exercising.

It is very rewarding and fun but be wary of who is still the head coach and respect that position.

And the first rule is that it is about the kids having fun. If they decide they want to be serious and pursue scholarships you can push a little more because they want to be pushed. But they have to make those decisions.

Screw that. You don't play competitive high school sports in the name of fun (assuming his sister is in high school), even at the 7/8th grade level. If you are just playing for fun you are doing your team a disservice. You play because 1) you are good at it 2) you like playing it 2) you are competitive and want to win. This is why most teams have "cuts" or a bench.

What makes you qualified to coach? What is your philosophy? What is your training plan?

It takes a lot more then being pretty good back in the day to coach.

Also, I noticed that you said you never ran in college. You also admit to having gained over 50lbs so I assume you have not kept up your love of running. So you just plan on winging it?

I have watched plenty of "guru's" who are currently running and with more experience at higher levels of competition than you run kids into the ground and ruin their love of running and frick up their hips and knees.

Does your niece even care that much? Is she just having fun. How old is she now? What grade is she in? Is this about her or you and your brother?

I think the fastest 400 I ever ran competitively was like a 55. Granted I was a sprinter and ran a 19 sec 200.

You lying motherfricker!

If you ran a 19 for a 200 then you would have bar none been your states champion in the 200 at any level. If you post proof that you did this, and it would be on your state's high school's athletic website I will buy your next game.

Also the world record for a man's 200m in high school is a 20.13.
