Consumers can register at the Direct Marketing Association's (DMA) consumer website: www.DMAchoice.org for a processing fee of $2 for a period of ten years. Registering online is the fastest way to see results. DMAchoice offers consumers a simple, step-by-step process that enables them to decide what mail they do and do not want.

I did that for me and the spousal unit years ago, plus signed up for the credit card opt out for pre-screened offers. Link for that is on the same page.
Those 2 steps really reduced our junk mail. The credit card offers were almost daily. Now I get one only rarely from a company I already do business with.
About the only other junk mail we get are the flyers from local grocery stores that every box gets, and renewal requests and such from magazines we get.

I love the USPS. For 49 cents, they'll come to your house, pick up a letter and deliver it, to the door, anywhere in the continental US. That's amazing. And I think rates of lost mail are way over-exaggerated; the vast majority of mail reaches its destination.
Back in the '90s, they were completely self-funded and didn't get any extra tax dollars. Then congress gave their employees a big, unrealistic retirement package and funding rules, and it shot their budget all to hell. Pretty impressive, nonetheless.

The post office is hamstrung by the government regulation.

You should be happy. At least someone acknowledges your existence.

And no matter what I tell the USPS they will keep bringing this crap to my house.
So you want them to go through your mail now to see what is important and what is not?
You remind me of this crazy woman who use to live in the neighborhood next to mine. One day the mailman was in my neighborhood delivery mail and she was coming down the road as he was crossing the street. She stopped him and asked when her tax refund was coming in. Me and someone else was outside and we could hear him telling her that he has nothing to do with tax refunds, that he delivers what he is given and she was getting all pissy with him.
