I haven’t read it in awhile, but I believe it was written with the idea that processing power had continued to increase exponentially from 1994 to the book’s timeline. Demand for the power still outpaced the supply (as tends to happen with all highly valuable commodities).

The point was simply meant to be that even if we could somehow get to this theoretical digital utopia, assuming that it would be accessible to everyone is still far from a given. Odds are, it would only be available to the richest of the rich in the early days, then would gradually become more accessible as the tech improved. But just like improvements in medical care haven’t made that accessible to everyone, improvements in computing power likely wouldn’t make this available to everyone either. If it requires resources to operate, some sort of rationing scheme will be necessary.

Full disclosure: I’m an economist, so I know that I find way too much joy in exploring what theoretical markets for imaginary technology would look like haha. But I know that’s not the purpose of the thread, so sorry for derailing

Yeah I'm actually watching altered carbon right now.

And to the previous poster. I'm not talking about creating a hard drive of your memories, but instead extending the viability of the human consciousness indefinitely. With that would be the ability to craft your own reality any way you would like. Extend the viability of the human brain indefinitely with the ability to create your own curated reality. A handcrafted heaven.

Or which would you prefer? For your mind to be implanted into a cyborg, that would keep you grinding out life at life's terms? Or a guaranteed utopia of your own choice, but without what you and I would describe as reality
