The Druid on the back of the speeder is named R2D2. He originally belonged to Amadala who was Luke Skywalker's mother before Luke's Jedi Knight father Anakin turned to the dark side of the Force and became Darth Vader. But Lukw doesn't know any of that... yet.
Anyway, that droid contains plans to a space station the Galatic Empire is building called the Death Star. This space station is capable of totally destroying an entire planet. The old man, Obi Wan Kenobi, is an old Jedi Knight who was a friend of Ankin Skywalker before Skywalker turned to the Dark Side. He and Luke are trying to smuggle R2D2 off this planet (Tatooine) and get it to the Rebel Aalince's hidden base on Yavin 4 before it's too late and the Empire destroyed that planet and crushes the rebellion with it.
Th two guys in white armor are called Stormtroopers. They're soldiers in the Imerial Army. They know there is a droid somewhere in the area that has the plans to the Death Star. They set up roadblocks to check everyone coming into or out of The space port of Mos Eisley. When Obi Wan and Like are stopped by them Obi Wan uses an old Jedi mind trick where he says "These are not the droids you're looking for". Through the force, he's basically using mind control over the Stormtroopers. As Obi Wan later explains to Luke when asked how he did that, Obi tells him "The Force can have a strong influence on the weak mind".

You'd think something the size of Texas chilling at orbit level would be seen by some enterprising novice astronomers, or you know, someone with eyes and the inclination to look up once in a while.

People make the mistake of thinking of these things as 3rd dimensional objects. These craft are transdimensional and are simply blinking in and out of this plane of existence in a very ethereal state when they slow down below the light barrier. These beings have obviously mastered transdimensional travel and utilize stargates or wormholes to appear in our three dimensional skies.
