As you push the plug in, there is a brief moment when the lights come on. Then as you push it all the way in, there’s a faint clicking noise (like an arc) and lights go out.
Gotcha. Not a short, sounds more like it’s just not making good contact.
You’re sure it’s the male plug? If it’s coming on briefly then going back off, it sounds like the blades are losing contact as they slide in. If you’re sure it’s the male plug, it might be due to corrosion on the blades or something. If so you can probably clean it up with a wire brush or better yet a can of contact cleaner.

Update.
Got a male end at hardware store and wired it in. All good. Worked great. Thanks for tips.

Why waste something that can be fixed?

I do this all the time. But I use solder and shrink wrap.

All you're doing is doubling the length not the current. Scotchlock them together and have a beer.

Like many things it’s sometimes cheaper to replace than to fix especially if you aren’t sure what you are doing. Piece of mind knowing you have less of a chance of burning your house down.

Lights should be going on sale right about now. If you don’t want to burn your house down, throw that shite away and spend $8 to buy another string.
I went to Home Depot and Wal Mart this morning. Couldn’t find one box of lights on the shelves. I blame Joe Biden

Are they LED or traditional?
If LED there is a capacitor and resistor in the plug and you can't do that.
If traditional you can splice a new plug end but take note there will be no ground and no fuse protection.
You can get a gfci plug to plug the new splice into before plugging into that outlet.
