A president was assassinated in broad daylight in front of hundreds of witnesses and school was not cancelled then.

The government has done lots of things in broad daylight without cancelling school

They are anticipating severe weather at the time when kids will be traveling on the bus. Tornados are rare but there is a strong possibility that some roads may become blocked by downed trees. The school
Would much rather dismiss early than have kids unable to get home so they have to keep them

Back in the day we had to crawl 2 miles through broken glass just to drink some bathwater.
Nowadays they close schools for a little bit of rain.

This. I used to work at a school and there was nothing worse than waiting on a kid to get picked up after working all day. A lot of the parents didn’t have transportation. We weren’t supposed to transport them ourselves due to liability issues, and if the kid missed some kind of medicine or didn’t get fed, more liability.
